Solenoids

Safe, reliable operation in the harshest aerospace environments

A solenoid is an electro-magnetic device that converts electrical energy into a magnetic force to move an iron rod (armature). This magnetic force is created when an electric signal is applied to a solenoid coil.

The solenoid operates by opening and closing orifices to control air or fluid flow, which in turn operates larger devices like valves, fuel metering units, actuators in engine controls and environmental control applications.

Solenoids and solenoid valves are part of the Honeywell family of Electro Mechanical Interface Devices (EMIDs) which also includes Electro-Hydraulic Servo Valves (EHSV), and torque motors.

EMIDs convert electric signals into mechanical power by manipulating fluid flow. Essentially, Honeywell EMIDS help operate complex equipment remotely.

Having mastered the critical elements of solenoid integration with valves, Honeywell holds a leading position with a line of compact, lightweight, and highly durable pneumatic and fuel solenoids.

Although solenoids have applications outside of the aerospace industry; aviation applications are more demanding in terms of safety, reliability and their often-demanding operating environments.

To meet these needs, Honeywell has developed high-temperature and high-vibration solenoids and torque motors to provide differentiating solutions in the harsh high temperature environment of gas turbine engine operation.
