Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is Flight Preview?
A: Flight Preview is an app developed by Honeywell to increase a pilot's situational awareness around their destination airport. We do this by augmenting a traditional approach plate with an animated, three-dimensional view of a selected approach. Our 3D-modeled terrain can be overlaid with real satellite imagery to enhance the realism.
Q: How do I get Flight Preview?
A: You can download Flight Preview for your iPad from the App Store.
Q: What are the system requirements for Flight Preview?
A: Flight Preview requires at least iOS 8.4 or above, and an iPad. Honeywell recommends at least an iPad 3 for best performance.
Q: How much does Flight Preview cost?
A: Flight Preview includes a free demo airport (Hawai'i Kahului Airport, PHOG) so you can view the full functionality of the app using that airport. If you wish to use Flight Preview to view an approach to a different airport, you must purchase a data subscription to the region that airport is located in. Regional subscriptions vary in price. A monthly subscription to a region costs $1.99, and a full year's subscription to a region will cost $19.99.
Q: How do I pay for Flight Preview?
A: Flight Preview itself is free, but if you want to use the full functionality of the app, you must purchase a data subscription (either monthly, or annually) covering the region(s) in which you wish to preview your airport's approach. You can do this through the Apple App Store, directly from inside the Flight Preview app.
Q: How does the data subscription model work?
A: If you wish to use Flight Preview to visualize an approach anywhere other than the demo airport (Hawai'i Kahului Airport, PHOG), you must purchase a data package. The data packages are required for Flight Preview to generate a 3D approach that aligns with the most current approach plate data for a particular region. By default, the data subscriptions are auto-renewing. Data packages can be purchased through the app itself, in the "Subscriptions" screen. You may initiate a purchase either by tapping the region you wish, or by selecting that region's "buy" button. Honeywell will charge your credit card on file with the Apple App Store in order to complete the purchase. After the purchase is made, Flight Preview will automatically begin downloading your data for use. You may then preview an approach to any airport located in the region you just purchased.
Q: How can I cancel my data subscriptions?
A: You can cancel your subscriptions at any time. To do so, or to manage other subscription options, you must go to the iTunes Account Settings on your device. Tapping your Apple ID on the iTunes account settings screen will take you to your account settings, where subscriptions can be managed. We have also provided a direct link to that setting from within Flight Preview. More information can be found from Apple by visiting this page: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202039.
Q: How do I manage data usage on my device?
A: The "Subscriptions" screen contains a helpful graph charting the data usage on your device, including what is used by Flight Preview. If you wish to reduce the amount of data flight preview is using, you can delete regional data downloads by clicking the "trash" icon next to that region. Please note: this will NOT invalidate your purchase. It will, however, remove all the approach data for that region. If you wish to preview an approach in that region later, you will need to re-download that data. Flight Preview will prompt you with a pop-up notification if this becomes necessary.
Q: Does Flight Preview need an internet connection to work?
A: For best results, we recommend previewing your approach with an active internet connection. This will allow you to stream satellite terrain data to the device, heightening the realism of the rendered approach. You will also need to have an internet connection to download any new regional approach data.
Q: Can I use Flight Preview offline?
A: You can use Flight Preview offline; the 3D approach will be rendered using Flight Preview's internal mapping engine, with a synthetic terrain. However, you will need an internet connection for realistic streaming satellite terrain and to download any new approach plates.
Q: How can I switch the overhead and 3D maps?
A: You may switch from the overhead to 3D approach view at any time by tapping the icon on the lower right of the interface. In 3D mode, you will see the overhead airplane icon. Tapping this will switch the view to the overhead map. Likewise, when viewing the overhead map, the 3D cube icon will change your view to 3D mode.
Q: Does Flight Preview cover the whole world?
A: No, at this time Flight Preview only covers the continental USA, Alaska and Hawai'i.
Q: Does Flight Preview show weather conditions?
A: No, Flight Preview does not show weather conditions. You may see cloud formations in some of the 3D satellite imagery, but that is not a real-time representation of the weather in that area.
Q: Is there a cost savings by purchasing a full year subscription?
A: Yes! If you purchase a full year subscription to a region, you will save 17% over the cost of a monthly purchase for that same time period.
Q: How do regional approach data downloads work?
A: If you input an airport to preview, the app will automatically attempt to download the approach data for the state that airport is located in. When you purchase a region, you will have the option at that time to download all of that region's approach plate data.
