Staying Ahead of the 3G Sunset in Europe

Staying Ahead of the 3G Sunset in Europe

Cellular technology continues to evolve as mobile network providers phase out 3G networks to make way for faster, more reliable 4G and 5G long-term evolution (LTE) capabilities. European cellular operators are preparing to sunset their 3G networks. Exact timing for the transition from 3G to 4G will vary by country and carrier, with most 3G systems expected to be taken offline by the end of 2021.

Business aviation operators in Europe need to confirm that their aircraft are ready to communicate in a post-3G LTE world. Many aircraft are equipped with routers that offer a 2G/3G option. When 3G coverage is no longer available, the router will revert to 2G coverage, which may provide users a degraded connectivity experience, compared to 3G.

Operators will want to make sure their aircraft is 4G-compatible, with routers like the Honeywell GoDirect Router, which operates on 4G networks. It uses Honeywell’s proprietary GoDirect Routing Software to provide all the capabilities passengers that the 4G network can offer, including the ability send and receive emails, host video conferences and surf the web and much more, with a secure and wireless connection.

It’s easy for operators with legacy 3G capabilities to make their aircraft 4G-ready well ahead of the scheduled 3G sunset. Special pricing on the one-of-a-kind GoDirect Router, available through Dec. 31, 2020, makes this the perfect time to upgrade.
