Why Radiation Testing Is Important

Radiation testing is a type of testing that is done to evaluate the ability of a product or material to withstand exposure to ionizing radiation, such as X-rays or gamma rays. The purpose of this testing is to determine how the product will perform and hold up under conditions where it may be exposed to radiation in its intended use.

Radiation testing can have several effects on a product, including physical changes to its structure, changes in its electrical or electronic properties, and changes in its chemical properties. The effects of radiation exposure can vary depending on the type of radiation, the duration of exposure, and the dose of radiation received.

Products, such as electronics used in space, are particularly sensitive to radiation exposure and may require extensive testing to ensure their reliability and performance in their intended environments. In these cases, radiation testing can play a critical role in determining the safety and efficacy of these products.

Types Of Space Equipment Tested For
The Effects Of Radiation Include

SATELLITES

Satellites are exposed to high levels of radiation in space, and their electronics and components must be able to withstand this exposure to function properly.

SPACECRAFT

Spacecraft, including rovers, landers, and other planetary exploration vehicles, must also be tested for radiation resistance to ensure their survival and functionality in harsh radiation environments.

ELECTRONICS AND COMPUTER SYSTEMS

Electronics and computer systems are particularly sensitive to radiation exposure and must be tested to ensure they continue to function properly in space.

SOLAR PANELS

Solar panels, which are critical to the power supply of many spacecrafts, are tested to ensure they can withstand radiation exposure without degradation of their performance.

PROTECTIVE MATERIALS AND SHIELDING

Materials used to protect spacecraft and their components from radiation are tested to evaluate their effectiveness and reliability.

ASTRONAUT EQUIPMENT

Equipment used by astronauts, such as spacesuits and radiation dosimeters, must be tested to ensure their safety and performance in the harsh radiation environment of space.
