Clearing The Air On A “CLEARED TO” (UM79) CPDLC Message

There have been reports that some operators using CPDLC (Controller Pilot Data Link Communication) have been misinterpreting a certain uplink message sent by ATC to the aircraft. The uplink message in question here is the UM79 message, which is of the form: “CLEARED TO [waypoint] VIA ROUTE CLEARANCE.”
This Quick Topic video has been put together to explain what this message means and what it does not mean when it appears on your aircraft’s CPDLC display, as in Figure 1.
