Aviation Week Honors Honeywell for Innovation During COVID-19 Pandemic

At Honeywell Aerospace, we rise to the challenges facing the aerospace and aviation industries. Our innovations help make flying safer, and the COVID-19 pandemic has been no exception. One such innovation is the Honeywell UV Treatment System, a portable ultraviolet-C light (UVC) cart specifically designed for public transport systems like aircraft, railways, buses, and ferries.

In October, Aviation Week chose Honeywell Aerospace as the winner in the Special Projects category in its annual Program Excellence Awards for the Honeywell UV Treatment System. The awards are “designed to identify lessons learned and best practices, and then share these throughout the industry to improve overall program performance,” according to the publication.

Bob Lenz, senior director of product management, accepted the award on behalf of Honeywell Aerospace.

The Honeywell UV Treatment System program began in April 2020 to provide customers with solutions to facilitate safe air travel as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Commercial air travel decreased 60% in 2020 compared to 2019 because of the pandemic. In the earliest months, air travel had virtually ground to a halt. Airlines and other transportation providers were seeking ways to restore passenger confidence in the safety of public travel during the pandemic.

This UV Treatment System is flexible, compact, and cost-effective. It can be implemented for as little as $2 per use, depending on fleet size and treatment frequency. About the size of an aircraft beverage cart, the system can treat thirty rows of seats in less than ten minutes.

The UV Treatment System program set a new standard for speed, launching the first product to market in 79 days and three products within 10 months. These included the UV Treatment Wand, a backpack-style device using UVC technology.
