7 Fun Facts About the RE220 APU

7 Fun Facts About the RE220 APU

Honeywell’s RE220 auxiliary power unit flies onboard several of the world’s best-selling transcontinental business jets and regional airliners, including the Bombardier Global 5000/5500/6000/Express/XRS; and Gulfstream V, G550, G650 and G650ER; and Sukhoi Superjet 100. But, despite its popularity, here are some fun facts you may not know about the RE220.

  1. It keeps passengers cool and comfortable. The APU supplies compressed air to drive the aircraft’s air conditioning systems, along with electrical power for other aircraft requirements like cockpit and cabin systems. It can even restart the main engines during flight if needed.
  2. The RE220 was designed specifically for the Bombardier Global 5000/5500/6000/Express/XRS.
  3. The RE220 was modified to support the BGA applications. The modifications include a dual ignitor ignition system and dual-orifice atomizers for improved dispatch and in flight reliability
  4. Its 60kVA output supports higher electrical loads than most other APUs, which generate 40kVA. That is important as business and regional aircraft become more electric and demands for onboard equipment grow.
  5. The RE220 was the first general aviation APU to communicate with the aircraft’s maintenance data acquisition unit (MDAU), enabling pilots and mechanics to monitor performance and troubleshoot from the flight deck or flight line.
  6. The ultrareliable RE220 APU will start up to 37,000 feet and operate to 41,000 feet, delivering the kind performance operators expect for aircraft of this type.
  7. The HGT400 APU is the RE220 but re-qualified to the latest FAA TSO-C77b requirements and addresses obsolescence issues. Same APU, same core, same high reliability and lowest cost of ownership.
