SURFACE ALERTS SAVE LIVES

Every second matters to detect runway incursions and avoid fatal accidents

Cockpit Alerts Speed Pilot Response Time

Detect hazards within 30 seconds

Honeywell SURF-A uses GPS data, automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast (ADS-B), and advanced analytics to identify other aircraft on or near the runway that could cause an incursion within the next 30 seconds.

Direct aural and visual alerts to pilots

SURF-A provides timely alerts directly in the cockpit—both visual and audible—ensuring pilots know potential hazards before they become critical. Most other solutions alert the control tower but do not alert pilots directly or only provide visual alerts, which can delay response time.

Complements other runway safety solutions

SURF-A will be available as a software update to enhanced ground proximity warning systems (EGPWS) and traffic alert and collision avoidance systems (TCAS). SURF-A is expected to be available for new aircraft and retrofit in 2025, pending FAA certification.

How It Works: Honeywell Surface Alert System

Real-Time Monitoring
Continuous surveillance of runway and taxiway areas to detect potential conflicts.
Automated Cockpit Alerts
Immediate aural and visual notifications to pilots when their aircraft is on a trajectory to collide.
Visual Pilot Interface
Clear and intuitive interface ensures that pilots can quickly understand and respond to alerts.
Proven Technology
Numerous flights on Honeywell's Boeing 757 aircraft demonstrate SURF-A’s effectiveness in real-world scenarios.

“Even one runway incursion, excursion or wrong-surface incident is one too many. SURF-A adds an ‘extra set of eyes’ in the cockpit to prevent runway accidents.”

Jim Currier, President, Honeywell Aerospace Technologies
