Hydrogen: A Tool in Our “Zero-Emission Aviation” Toolbox

Hydrogen: A Tool in Our “Zero-Emission Aviation” Toolbox

Dive into the transformative potential of hydrogen in aviation with the recent FlightGlobal webinar, hosted in association with Honeywell Aerospace Technologies. The event brought together industry leaders to discuss the infrastructure, technology challenges, certification and policy incentives needed to transition from carbon-dependent aviation to a net-zero future.

Phil Robinson, Senior Director of Engineering at Honeywell, led the conversation with an emphasis on the critical role of hydrogen in achieving zero emissions, stating, "I see hydrogen as an important tool in our toolbox toward zero-emission aviation." He elaborated on Honeywell's contributions through advanced technology and partnerships, which are all working to catapult hydrogen to the forefront of aviation innovation.

The other industry leaders in attendance highlighted recent growth in hydrogen technologies. Paul Hutton, CEO of Cranfield Aerospace Solutions, discussed the development of scalable hydrogen-electric propulsion systems. Juriaan Kellermann, CEO of Fokker Next Gen, focused on hydrogen combustion propulsion and other sustainable aircraft technologies. James McMicking, Chief Strategy Officer of ZeroAvia, talked about creating hydrogen-electric powertrains for regional aircraft.

The panelists then pivoted to dicuss the regional differences between the US and Europe in hydrogen development, underscoring the need for international collaboration and coherent regulations. Robinson noted that European nations are making significant investments in hydrogen infrastructure, while the US requires coordinated action from federal, state and local governments. He claimed, "Getting the support for airport infrastructure at the municipality level will be absolutely critical.” Local governments will play a crucial role in accelerating the viability and adoption of hydrogen-powered aviation.

The FlightGlobal webinar emphasized the immense potential of hydrogen in revolutionizing the aviation industry. With leaders like Phil Robinson at the helm, Honeywell is committed to do its part to realize a future of more sustainable aviation. The collaborative efforts of industry innovators, coupled with supportive policies and infrastructure, will be key to achieving this vision.

Be part of the movement to redefine the skies. The future of aviation is in our hands, and hydrogen is the game-changer we've been waiting for.
