Honeywell HGuide Team Works with Universities to Support the Next Generation #FutureShaper
Theo Kuijper van der Duijn
Our HGuide inertial sensor and navigation team has teamed up with several universities around the world in an effort to advance the industry forward and help the next wave of #futureshapers reach new heights.
For the past three decades, Honeywell has been the world leader in high-performance inertial sensors and navigators used to guide nearly every aircraft flying today.
Honeywell’s HGuide inertial sensor and navigation team has taken that same level of subject matter expertise, engineering know-how and first-hand experience to help customers outside the aerospace industry meet their navigation challenges by providing high-performance inertial measurement units (IMUs) and inertial navigation systems (INS/GNSS).
Today, our HGuide IMUs and INS/GNSSs are being used by university students across the globe to compete in contests and design challenges for applications like formula student racing, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), autonomous snowmobiles, surface marine vessels and unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs).

“Working with university programs on new applications has been a terrific experience. We’ve learned a lot in the process and have garnered insightful feedback from aspiring engineers and next generation #futureshapers as they use our offerings in real world applications,” said Chris Lund, senior director, HGuide Navigation and Sensors, Honeywell Aerospace.
Most recently, the FH Joanneum University of Applied Sciences in Graz/Austria used one of our MEMS IMUs in three different races to improve navigation performance and reached two first place awards for being one of the fastest formula student combustion cars.

The race car utilizes 25 different sensors that are used to monitor engine parameters like oil temperature, wheel load measurement and linear potentiometer to measure the damper travel. Our HGuide IMU was used to measure data for vehicle dynamics improvement, something the team used to their advantage to improve the car’s performance before races.
“Honeywell’s expertise and application engineering support were vital to our success as well as the support of their distributor, Sensorwell. Their integration experience was outstanding and working with their team to better understand how to get the most out of the unit was great, said Lukas Picker, leader of the FH Joanneum University racing team. We look forward to continuing to work with them and their knowledgeable application engineers.”
“We look forward to working with Honeywell and Sensorwell, as we explore further and new applications for which IMUs can be used,” said Valentin Keck, electronics project leader of the FH Joanneum University racing team.
