New Coating Raises the Bar for Industrial Uses

The new coating is now being field-tested by several major oil and gas companies to protect production equipment, drilling tools, housings, and mandrels from corrosion, abrasion, or erosion. Other field evaluations are planned.

Coming from a demanding industry like aerospace, we understand the vigorous demands placed on essential equipment used by oil and gas companies during the exploration and development processes,” said Honeywell’s Greg Haywood, Senior Director Business Development.

 “The coating – and the unique advanced electroplating process used to apply it – can be used in additional aerospace and non-aerospace applications, including automotive, electric-generation, and more.”

The new Honeywell coating is designed to outperform conventional protective materials like tungsten carbide coatings, which are applied using a high-velocity oxygen fuel process, and hard chrome electroplating.

The new material is more robust, offers greater corrosion protection, and improved cost of ownership compared to the most widely used industrial coatings.

Honeywell has global capabilities and decades of experience using advanced materials and electroplating technologies to protect parts used in its extensive line of aerospace products and other flight-critical components like landing gear and flight control actuators, Haywood pointed out.

We understand the unique challenges of building equipment to withstand the harshest imaginable conditions of normal operations – in the air, on the ground, and even in space,” he said. “Our coatings and the proprietary advanced electroplating process we’ve developed protect vital parts from premature failure, which can impact performance, efficiency, and cost.
