Solving the Fright on a Dark and Stormy Flight

Solving the Fright on a Dark and Stormy Flight

It’s October and you know what that means: Halloween is approaching. If you’re like me, you hate flying in the dark, and let’s face it … storms are spooky! Turbulence and crying babies are never a good fit for that five-hour flight. Lucky for you, when you’re traveling in an aircraft equipped with Honeywell’s state-of-the-art technology, you’re flying with solutions designed to ensure a safe and connected flight even through the darkest squalls.

Have you ever wondered how pilots can see what’s in front of them while flying directly through a storm and landing during?

SmartView Synthetic Vision System provides 3-D color images of runways, terrain, and obstacles, giving pilots a clear view of the virtual flight path. This increased level of situational awareness is particularly useful when flying to unfamiliar locations, in bad weather, or a spooky night, reducing errors and pilots’ workload.

Honeywell’s Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System (EGPWS) is integrated with SmartView to help pilots reduce the risk of controlled flight into terrain by using aircraft inputs and an internal navigation database to provide timely, accurate information – and alerts – about terrain, obstacles or goblins in the area.

SmartRunway and SmartLanding, software enhancements to EGPWS increase pilots’ situational awareness during taxi, take-off and landing no matter whether it’s raining, snowing, hailing or lightning like crazy outside.

These systems address one of the National Transportation Safety Board’s (NTSB) top 10 global safety concerns: runway incursions. By keeping pilots aware of their positions, SmartRunway and SmartLanding greatly reduce the risk of ending up on the wrong runway or taxiway. SmartLanding further helps create a safe landing by alerting pilots if the aircraft is going too fast or too high or is going to incur a long landing, which can be challenging to do on a spooky night.

Pilots and passengers also can feel more secure when they’re flying with Honeywell’s IntuVue advanced weather radar system. Automatically scanning the sky and providing a 3D view in the cockpit, IntuVue enables more efficient routing around hazards like severe weather and turbulence. That means a safer and more comfortable flight for you, no matter what time of year it is.

Another way Honeywell keeps you connected in the dark is with its JetWave connectivity hardware, powering global high-speed in-flight Wi-Fi service. Whether you’re flying on a spooky night or just want to watch your favorite scary movie, JetWave lets you do just that with the same fast, connected experience in the air as you enjoy on the ground.

Here’s to safe, fright-free travels throughout the year – and Happy Halloween!
