PIREP: Outdated Charts?

PIREP: Outdated Charts?

An operator reported that even though their chart database was current the system was showing outdated charts. In some cases, charts are revised in the middle of the database release cycle. Based on information included in the database, some charts can have a later effective date. An example of the chart effectivity window is shown in Figure 1. The chart effectivity header (titled Charts Effective, followed by the date) is displayed in the chart title dropdown menu. A list of procedure identifiers and index numbers for charts having a future effectivity is displayed below the chart effectivity header.

Figure 1.

In this case the operator was at a major airport with multiple pages of procedures as shown in Figure 1. For example, the BANNG 2 RNAV departure is shown near the top of the list based on the effectivity of the chart cycle and again at the bottom for the charts becoming effective on 07OCT21. The pilot would need to scroll down to see the current chart. This is just one reason why we always check chart effectivity.

In most cases charts in an update cycle are effective immediately upon receipt. When there is an exception an effective date is shown on the chart. The effective date is shown with white lettering within black blocks along with the issue date and notated by Eff in front of the date in the top strip of the chart.
