Honeywell Auxiliary Power Unit Wins Arizona Chamber Award As ‘Hottest Thing Made In Arizona’
- Trusted by airlines worldwide, Honeywell’s Arizona-made Auxiliary Power Unit has set the standard for aviation safety and reliability
PHOENIX, October 29, 2025 – Honeywell (NASDAQ: HON) today announced it has won the Hottest Thing Made in Arizona competition, hosted by the Arizona Chamber of Commerce & Industry in partnership with the Arizona Manufacturers Council, for Honeywell Aerospace’s 131-9 Auxiliary Power Unit (APU).
An APU is a critical piece of aircraft equipment that provides electrical power. While an aircraft is on the ground, the bleed air from an APU also provides pneumatic power for the plane’s Environmental Control System, ensuring proper cabin heating, cooling and pressurization. Honeywell’s 131-9 APU for Airbus and Boeing aircraft is known for its reliability and low maintenance costs throughout its entire life cycle.
Honeywell’s first APU took to the skies in the 1950s and the company has built more than 100,000 since then – with the vast majority constructed in Arizona. More than 36,000 APUs on both fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft are in service today across more than 150 regional, executive, commercial and military applications.
During the January 2009 “Miracle on the Hudson” emergency landing, a Honeywell 131-9 APU provided power for Capt. Sully Sullenberger’s flight controls, flight displays and other systems after his main engines lost power. The power from the APU enabled his Airbus A320 to touch down safely in the Hudson River, sparing the lives of 155 people onboard.
“For more than 100 years, Honeywell has been on the leading edge of technology and solutions to support aviation safety and efficiency,”
- Dave Marinick, President, Engines & Power Systems, Honeywell Aerospace Technologies
“Our team of designers and engineers are constantly evolving our APUs to provide higher levels of efficiency and reliability, bringing the future of aviation to life.”
The annual Hottest Thing Made in Arizona competition is open to any product made in Arizona, from any sector of the manufacturing industry. The winner is selected by public vote. Previous winners include the Dexcom G7, a smartphone-enabled continuous glucose monitoring system, in 2024; and the Boeing AH-64 Apache helicopter, which was awarded in 2023’s inaugural competition.
This year’s finalists also included the Axon Body 4 Camera, which helps officers work more safely and efficiently while enhancing accountability and transparency; and Lucid Gravity SUV, an all-electric model that delivers up to 450 miles of range, 828 horsepower and 0-60 mph acceleration in just 3.4 seconds.
