Passion for Innovation Growth Drives an Aero Chief

Passion for Innovation Growth Drives an Aero Chief

Honeywell technologies impact everybody around the world and the work I do at AERO is part of that. I was mesmerized working on technologies such as Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning Systems (EGPWS) which saved more lives than any other Avionics product had been manufactured, Navigation and Radio  products that bring in flight efficiencies, optimal routing, better situational awareness, contributing that safeguards air travel safety, and Integrated Multi-Mode Receiver (IMMR) that provides state of the art navigation, guidance and landing system. Currently, I am working on: JetWave that provides next generation connectivity; Honeywell GoDirect Flight Efficiency that contributes to cleaner skies; Honeywell GoDirect Flight Services; and GoDirect Maintenance and Service Plans.

Working on cutting edge technologies has always been my motivation. My team developed a GPS which could operate at -40 degrees C and +85 degrees C, at 40000 ft. and at sea level. If a fluid is splashed at it or if it is subject to sand, dust, humidity or fog and it will not fail. The people whom I worked with includes colleagues, friends and mentors, creating an ecosystem which always brings the best out of me and reminds me of the famous lines of Nobel laureate poet Rabindranath Tagore, “Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high, where knowledge is free. Where the world has not been broken up into fragments by narrow domestic walls.” The constant nudge and push that I get from them drive me to explore more and keep me excited like a freshman.

Aviation technologies are taking a steep merging trajectory and embracing concurrent technologies. There is a tremendous focus on data that gets generated from equipment and how it can be used. Platforms such as Airbus A350 have close to 400,000 data points for health monitoring and if connected, routed and processed, opens new areas for data engineering and analytics and newer business models. Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and Deep Learning are making more inroads; interactive mechanisms like gesture, touch, gaze, voice could revolutionize future cockpits without any pilots. So, the world will see in future a new level of abstraction in core technologies, which will open more disruptions and possibilities. It is important to keep an eye on latest technology disruptions, adopt emerging technologies faster and reskill ourselves with the required competencies and fuel the innovation engine.

Nayyar Rao
