New EGPWS Database Improves Safety for C-130, C-27J Operators

New EGPWS Database Improves Safety for C-130, C-27J Operators

Honeywell is introducing a new commercial tactical database for the Mark V enhanced ground proximity warning system (EGPWS), which is designed to meet the specific needs of C-130 and C-27J operators from nations that are not part of the Joint User Group (JUG).

The new commercial tactical database (718-1673-005) is not export restricted, contains high-resolution global obstacles and terrain data with no terrain voids, and will be updated twice a year, according to Darin Fala, Lead Application Engineer for EGPWS databases.

Customers from non-JUG nations will need to obtain a new 16-gigabyte flash card from Honeywell to install the commercial tactical database,” Fala said. “The easiest way to do that is to order the card with the database already loaded. Understanding Your Tactical Terrain Database Choices

In addition to the commercial tactical database, Honeywell offers two terrain and warning system (TAWS) databases for C-130 and C-27J operators. These tactical databases meet the specific needs of military pilots who fly low-altitude missions to transport service members and supplies, often in challenging environments.

  • 718-1673-003: The original tactical database which is installed in new EGPWS units delivered to customers with a 4-gigabyte card. It contains terrain voids and is not updated.
  • 718-1673-004: Updated twice a year, this version uses export-restricted obstacle data and worldwide high-resolution terrain data. It is only available to approved JUG nations: Australia, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, New Zealand, Norway, India, New Zealand and the United States.

Honeywell also offers the standard commercial EGPWS database, designed for use by commercial operators. It contains worldwide airports, runways, commercial obstacles and terrain data.

At Honeywell, we pioneered the development of EGPWS technology 50 years ago, and we’re continuing to lead the way in helping operators avoid controlled flight into terrain (CFIT), as well as natural and manmade obstacles they may encounter on low-level missions.
