From Skies to Systems: An F-35 Pilot’s Path in Aerospace Technology
Ben Hutchins shares his journey from F-35 pilot to Honeywell leader, and how his experience influences his mission to enhance safety and deliver reliability in defense operations.
In the high-pressure world of a fighter pilot, few experiences are as demanding – or as rewarding – as flying the F-35. For Ben Hutchins, a retired U.S. Marine Corps pilot known by his call sign “Brutuz,” flying the F-35 wasn’t just a job – it was a calling. Today, that same purpose drives his work at Honeywell, where he serves as the senior director of government relations, helping define the future of aerospace technology.
With nearly three decades of decorated service in the United States Marine Corps, his path took him to the cockpit of the AV-8B Harrier before mastering the F-35 – the world's most advanced multi-role stealth aircraft.
"The F-35 isn’t just an aircraft; it’s a system that redefines what’s possible in aerial combat," Hutchins said. "To fly it is to understand what happens when innovation meets operational capability.”
Throughout his service, his assignments grew progressively more complex. Hutchins' contributions working for the Deputy Commandant for Aviation and leader in the Joint Staff, Joint Capabilities Directorate placed him at the helm of shaping modern defense technologies.
His career experience wasn’t only about piloting – it was about understanding the comprehensive interplay of tactical systems, advanced sensors and integrated technologies. That foundation serves him well at Honeywell, where today he works with product teams to help reimagine aerospace systems to optimize performance and help enable safety in the field.
'I know what’s at stake’: Blending personal experience with technological expertise
Hutchins offers a unique perspective that can bridge the gap between the needs of defense pilots and the advanced systems modern aircraft demand. He understands firsthand the challenges pilots face, such as the need to make real-time decisions based on sensory data and maintain stamina during extended missions. Above all else, he knows how crucial it is for pilots to fully trust their equipment.
"The F-35’s exceptional sensor suite gives pilots a comprehensive view of the battlefield," he said. "That capability depends on the reliability of the technologies underpinning it."
At Honeywell, his focus is supporting the adoption of groundbreaking technologies that meet the practical needs of pilots in critical scenarios. From advanced thermal management systems that support optimal sensor performance to cutting-edge cooling solutions vital to the next generation of aviation, Hutchins applies his experience with fighter aircraft to continuously help improve aerospace technologies.
"Our technologies aren’t just functional – they embody reliability, efficiency and durability," he said. "As a former pilot, I know what is at stake. Pilots rely on these systems like an ally in the cockpit."
Championing the needs of pilots with intelligent solutions
Hutchins’ contributions span beyond advancing avionics and hardware. He brings a human perspective deeply rooted in the challenges and triumphs of those in the field.
"A pilot’s mission success relies on trusting their equipment as much as their skill," he said. "At Honeywell, every innovation is inspired by that understanding – the systems we create work invisibly, seamlessly, to help aviators focus on the mission at hand."
Looking to the future, Hutchins predicts that the aerospace industry will leverage artificial intelligence, automation and advanced sensory suites to further amplify the effectiveness of aviators.
"As technology evolves, the role of the pilot will evolve too," he said. "We’re redefining what’s possible, empowering aviation professionals with systems that act like teammates."
