Near Real-Time Atmospheric Data in Minutes

Honeywell’s high-altitude LiDAR atmospheric sensing (HALAS) is a remotely-operated, ground-based weather information system that provides near real-time, high-altitude atmospheric measurements in as little as three minutes.

Full Atmospheric Observations in Minutes

To measure atmospheric pressure, temperature, humidity, and wind speed and direction, the HALAS system sends laser beams into the sky over a targeted area of interest. The system is capable of sending as many as 10 beams per second, providing more accurate readings than data from weather balloons with confidence levels up exceeding 100,000 feet in the atmosphere.

How it Works

HALAS is a remotely operated, ground-based weather information system that uses laser pulses to measure the atmosphere in targeted areas of interest and can provide data as frequently as every few minutes. This provides more accurate and relevant data than weather balloons, and HALAS can measure at altitudes exceeding 100,000 feet. Today, the system measures atmospheric pressure, temperature, humidity and wind speed and direction. Additional capabilities including aerosol measurement, optical turbulence and gas sensing will be added in the future.

Space Launches:

For space ranges that need to increase the number of launches and reduce unsuccessful missions caused by marginal weather conditions, Honeywell’s High Altitude LiDAR Atmospheric Sensing (HALAS) remotely operated weather information system provides near real-time atmospheric data to everyone on your launch team with a single device. With HALAS, you’re able to increase the frequency of launches with greater confidence knowing you have the latest weather information for a specific location at your fingertips.

Hypersonics / Missile Test

With twice as many launches, we believe this equates to more revenue and reduces costs for every launch. The HALAS system provides clear and timely weather data available through our proprietary software and was built on the foundation of our navigation and radar technology used by nearly every commercial aircraft over the past century.

Commercial Weather:

For meteorologists who need to increase the accuracy of weather predictions, Honeywell’s High Altitude LiDAR Atmospheric Sensing (HALAS) remotely operated weather information system provides near real-time atmospheric data with a single device. With HALAS, you’re able to provide frequent and more accurate weather observations in high altitudes for a specific location.
