Qingdao Airlines Selects Honeywell Auxiliary Power Units and Long-Term Maintenance Support

  • Honeywell will supply its 131-9A auxiliary power unit and 12-year maintenance support for Qingdao Airlines’ A320neo fleet.

ZHUHAI, China, Nov. 6, 2018 – Honeywell (NYSE: HON) has signed an agreement with Qingdao Airlines to supply auxiliary power units to Qingdao Airline’s new fleet of 24 Airbus A320neo aircraft. Honeywell will also provide a repair and maintenance program for these units for 12 years. This new agreement will help Qingdao Airlines manage its overall fleet cost. It will also extend Honeywell’s support to a total of 56 aircraft, including the airline’s fleet of 32 Airbus A320 aircraft.

“As a newer airline in a modern and fast-paced market, we need to stay competitive to grow. This means providing exceptional service to passengers, maintaining high fleet efficiency and keeping operational costs down,” said Zhang Fang, Vice President of Qingdao Airlines. “Since our beginning, we have turned to Honeywell to provide us with exceptional service and products that help maintain our competitive edge. In particular, Honeywell’s auxiliary power units and maintenance programs have contributed greatly to our company’s high performance and rapid growth. We are happy to see our fleet expand, and to partner with Honeywell again.”

The agreement provides a competitive overall cost of ownership for the 131-9A auxiliary power unit (APU) by allowing the airline to pay a fixed cost for repairs versus paying for each shop visit. It also provides Qingdao Airlines with outstanding performance and maintenance for its new APUs. Honeywell TAECO Aerospace (Xiamen) Co. Ltd. (HTAC), a Honeywell licensed repair and maintenance facility, will repair the 131-9A APUs for Qingdao Airlines’ new fleet. This domestic operation will assist Qingdao Airlines to reduce shipping costs and shorten its aircraft repair time. Combined, these factors will greatly improve fleet repair turnaround efficiency, and further enhance the airline’s profitability.

“Qingdao Airlines has achieved outstanding performance during the past year, and we have every reason to believe that our APUs and maintenance programs will help the airline improve reliability, decrease maintenance costs and provide an excellent passenger experience,” said Brian Davis, vice president, Airlines, Asia Pacific, Honeywell Aerospace. “The cooperation showcases Honeywell’s capability and commitment to the growing airline industry in China and worldwide.”

About Honeywell APUs

APUs are primarily used to power an airplane during ground operations, providing the electricity needed to run the air conditioning, start the main engines and more. They can also provide backup electrical power during flights. Honeywell engineered the first APU in 1948, has since produced more than 100,000 APUs, and has more than 36,000 in service today across more than 150 regional, executive, commercial and military platforms, including both fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft.

Honeywell recently shipped its 6,000th 131-9A APU. This puts the number of production APUs from the 131-9 family at more than 13,000 units, which have operated for more than 100 million flight hours. The 131-9 series APU has been selected by most airlines’ narrow-body aircraft and features a unique electronic control box that integrates advanced, plain-English troubleshooting logic and health-monitoring capabilities for intuitive maintenance. This helps increase its already-proven ability to reduce delays and flight cancellations, so airlines stay on schedule and their passengers reach their destinations on time.
