In its ongoing efforts to provide commercial helicopter pilots and operators with the safest and most advanced technology possible, Honeywell (NYSE: HON) secured a Technical Standard Order from the Federal Aviation Administration for its newest navigation product. This certification gives Honeywell the ability to work with customers to certify the product on specific helicopter platforms, bringing it one step closer to the commercial market.
Called the LASEREF VI inertial reference system for helicopters, the product leverages Honeywell’s existing inertial navigation products and technology from the civil fixed wing markets and applies them to the commercial helicopter market. LASEREF VI gives helicopter pilots more accurate navigation information such as heading, speed and position, keeping flights safe and efficient, especially when the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) is unavailable.
Unique to Honeywell’s product is the ability to blend inertial data from the LASEREF VI with positioning data from the GNSS. With this feature, pilots and operators can maintain precise positioning when flying in areas such as canyons or city centers where GNSS data can be lost due to interference.
With this Technical Standard Order secured, Honeywell is now working with several operators to secure platform certification of the LASEREF VI system, bringing the product one step closer to commercial use.
