Partnership with TAE significantly improves the operational availability of Australian Army’s M1A1 Abrams tanks
Honeywell Aerospace (NYSE: HON) has further strengthened its aftermarket support in Australia through an agreement with TAE. As part of the agreement, TAE will provide Total Logistics Support for the Honeywell AGT1500 engines for the Australian Army’s existing fleet of M1A1 Abrams main battle tanks. This local support will result in lower sustainment costs, significantly reduced downtime for repair and overhaul of the AGT1500 engines from nine months to three months, improved availability, and increased operator and maintainer training for the Australian Army.
“Australia is an important and strategic long-term growth space for Honeywell, and we are well-positioned to support the needs of the country,” said Mark Burgess, senior customer business director, APAC, Defense and Space, Honeywell Aerospace.
“The local approach creates opportunities for Australian industry to participate in the Honeywell supply chain network, thus helping to strengthen the local Australian defense industry’s capabilities through technology transfers, which simultaneously support local employment opportunities.”
Honeywell is also working with the Australian Army and TAE to establish an engine repair, overhaul and test facility at Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Base Amberley in Queensland to support M1A1 Abrams maintenance. The facility is expected to be completed by January 2015 and will begin with a staff of 12 people.
“Honeywell’s AGT1500 engine is well-known for its instant power, multi-fuel capabilities and stealthy operation, making it the world’s standard for tank durability and survivability,” said Andrew Sanderson, general manager, TAE.
“The in-country AGT1500 maintenance capability, with support from Honeywell, will deliver significant sustainment benefits to the Australian Army, create skilled jobs in Australia and help the Australian defense industry to move up in the global value chain.”
TAE is an authorized service partner for Honeywell in Australia and will provide the following support to the Australian Army for the AGT1500 engine in the M1A1 Abrams:
- Engine maintenance, repair and overhaul services
- Engineering and program management support
- Operator and maintenance training
- Supply Chain Management including spares and repairable items support
- Tooling and test equipment to establish a test cell and depot overhaul center at TAE’s Amberley facility
Expanding Aftermarket Support in Australia
In addition to increasing in-region aftermarket support for the AGT1500 engine, Honeywell is also actively helping to build the country’s defense capabilities by working with the Australian government and local companies to bolster other regional repair and overhaul services.
The company is also working to establish an F-35 Lightning II local repair and overhaul model for the aircraft’s Power and Thermal Management System (PTMS) and wheels and brakes. Honeywell is currently providing aftermarket support for the F-18 Hornet, AP-3C and C-130J, CH47 Chinook and M1A1 Abrams, both through local partners for spares and repair services and directly to RAAF and Australian Army operators.
