As demand for high-speed Wi-Fi on aircraft steadily increases, Honeywell’s JetWave satellite communications system will soon bring that connectivity to new Emirates B777X aircraft.
Emirates announced it and Thales signed a new agreement to provide Emirates’ Boeing 777X fleet with reliable, global, high-speed in-flight connectivity using Inmarsat’s GX global network, powered by Honeywell’s JetWave hardware. The partnership will give Emirates customers best-in-class connectivity on its upcoming Boeing 777X aircraft, which are due for delivery starting in 2020.
“The combination of GX Aviation’s global coverage and Honeywell’s JetWave hardware allows for a seamless experience of connectivity and capability from the time you walk on the airplane until you get off on the other side of the world, which cannot be duplicated by other networks,” said Mike Edmonds, president, Connectivity and Services, Honeywell Aerospace. “When airlines like Emirates, who fly global, long-haul routes, pick GX Aviation for in-flight connectivity, you know they understand the importance of being connected anywhere in the world. Only GX Aviation and JetWave can provide that.”
A survey of airline passengers by Honeywell in 2016 revealed that nearly 3 out of 4 passengers were ready to switch airlines in order to have access to a faster and more reliable Wi-Fi connection. In addition, out of more than 1,000 American travelers polled, only 22 percent reported their in-flight Wi-Fi to be extremely reliable over the past 12 months.
Emirates, one of the world’s leading long-haul carriers, has invested more than $200 million to equip its aircraft with connectivity. Demand for Wi-Fi on board has been steadily increasing, and today more than 800,000 passengers per month connect while inflight, the airline said.
The Honeywell-Inmarsat solution enables a true Connected Aircraft experience by offering a connectivity service that is reliable, global and provides a connected experience in the air, just like on the ground. It enables video streaming, live television streaming, file downloads and more, with seamless global coverage that ensures a consistent service on flight routes worldwide.
JetWave is now certified for more than 20 different aircraft types, selected by more than 27 airlines, installed on over 100 business jets nearing a total of 1,000 deliveries by the end of 2017. See this infographic to learn more about the progress of JetWave.
