The ADS-B Out Mandate requires you to have your aircraft upgraded by December 31, 2019, and the big date draws nearer each day. There may be as many as 6,000 aircraft still needing to be equipped, so each day you delay increases the challenges and uncertainty of getting your aircraft ready.

By starting today, you can avoid the installation facility backlogs, component shortages, installation price increases, and most importantly – the inability to fly to your key destinations.

Here’s how to prepare for your ADS-B date:

  1. It generally takes two weeks of downtime to retrofit and test your aircraft. Review your flight calendar and/or maintenance logs and identify windows of opportunity early.
  2. Schedule an appointment at your repair center in advance (a deposit may be required) so that if circumstances don’t allow you to park your aircraft now, you’ll have confidence that space and time will be available when you’re ready. This step is critically important because there are only a small number of repair stations with the expertise, test equipment, and the required Supplemental Type Certificates (STC) to perform this work.
  3. Depending on the age and configuration of your aircraft, and because ADS-B Out is an integrated system, there is no one-size-fits-all solution. You may need several additional components as part of the upgrade package. These may include: transponders, global positioning system, radio and communications systems, as well as other supporting component parts and software. It’s best to meet with your repair center representative (or contact Honeywell) well in advance of your installation appointment to determine what components you’ll need, and whether each will be available for your scheduled appointment.

There’s no better time than now to get started prepping for the big date! You currently have some flexibility and choice to upgrade your aircraft. Take advantage now because your opportunities lessen the longer you postpone.
