Reliable, high-speed onboard Wi-Fi is now available for the UH-60 Blackhawk for the first time, thanks to FAA supplemental type certification of the Honeywell Aspire 200™satellite communications system. The timing is ideal as the U.S. Army continues to sell surplus UH-60s to allied countries and other qualified commercial operators for a range of applications.
Many older Blackhawks ‘A’ models have been supplied to allied countries for use in military training and other government missions. Others are being converted for civilian uses as diverse as executive transportation, firefighting, law enforcement and air ambulance services. But regardless of their new mission, the UH-60 can benefit from upgraded technology as provided by Honeywell through its channel partner United Aero Group.
With Aspire 200, Honeywell has developed a satellite communications system that meets the unique requirements of helicopter operators. Aspire 200, combined with the High Data-Rate (HDR) software package, reduces the impact of rotating rotor blades on satellite signals and brings reliable broadband communications to the helicopter environment. In addition to the UH-60, the Aspire 200 system is also certified on Bell 429, AW 139 and AS350 airframes.
United Aero Group and Honeywell are working together to bring the advantages of “the connected helicopter” to operators. United Aero Group is a leading end-to-end provider of quality avionics, parts, repairs, and logistics services for a wide range of military and civilian helicopters. Headquartered in Stratford, CT., the company works with operators around the world and prides itself on maintaining close relationships with aircraft manufacturers, MROs, avionics companies, and avionics installers.
“We operate in more than 40 countries,” said Jamie Gelder, UAG president and general manager. “United Aero Group has extensive experience with Sikorsky platforms, including the UH-60. Our relationship with Honeywell allows us to create new opportunities for the upgrade of avionics and communications systems on this amazing helicopter to extend its service life and meet our customers’ requirements.”
United Aero Group’s associate company, Arista Aerospace operates an extensive aviation modification facility for multiple aircraft platforms and provided Honeywell with critical flight time aboard a UH-60 to complete the certification requirements. The company has several Blackhawk upgrades in process and will be displaying an Aspire 200 equipped Blackhawk at HAI Heli-Expo 2018.
