Tailored engines and system support the growing future demand driven by China’s “Belt and Road” initiative
Honeywell Aerospace will display its HTS900 and LTS101 turboshaft helicopter engines as well as its Sky Connect Tracker III communications system at the 2015 China Helicopter Exposition Sept. 9 to 13, 2015, at booth C107 at the AVIC Helicopter – Free Trade Zone area of Tianjin Port. The exposition is the only national level exhibition for helicopters with an air flight show, which aims to promote the rapid development of general aviation in China.
“China is predicted to become the world’s largest helicopter market over the next 30 years, and Honeywell is well positioned to support that growth via our propulsion, avionics systems, connectivity and service offerings,” said Briand Greer, president, Asia Pacific, Honeywell Aerospace. “We also expect the demand to continue to grow with China’s One Belt, One Road initiative, which will bring greater opportunities to China, especially in the western region, with its rugged topography that’s highly suitable to helicopter usage. Honeywell has some unique technology such as that in our HTS-900 engine that will help overcome the challenges of operating in those environments.”
Most recently, Honeywell has been working with General Dynamic Aero Technology and Eagle Copters of Calgary, Canada to bringing the first HTS-900 powered Bell 407 into China. Eagle Copters have developed the Bell 407HP that retrofits that platform with the HTS-900 Engine. With proven performance and reliability, the Eagle 407HP, powered by Honeywell’s HTS900 engine, is tailored to solve the problem of insufficient power in summer and high-altitude missions by enabling a further, faster and higher flight for less fuel.
Honeywell’s LTS101-700D-2 engine has been selected for the Changhe AC311 light helicopter, and the aircraft received its type certification in July 2012. Customer deliveries are in progress. “With customer deliveries happening, we are very focused on providing excellence in Customer Support for those LTS-101 operators and in conjunction with our own Aero Technical Support (ATS) organization, we are developing an aftermarket support network with our selected partners to meet the needs of our Customers” said Andy Gill, senior director, Asia Pacific, Business and General Aviation, Honeywell Aerospace. He added “Honeywell continues to develop upgrades and technology insertions for the LTS-101 and we introduce them as they become available.”
“In Honeywell 17th annual Turbine-Powered Civil Helicopter Purchasing Outlook, we expect 4,750 to 5,250 civilian-use helicopters to be delivered worldwide from 2015 to 2019, with China showing a growth rate higher than the world average for the same period. The primary segments showing a demand for civil helicopters in China are emergency medical service, search and rescue, tourism, law enforcement, and oil and gas,” Gill added.

- HTS900 Turboshaft Engine: The HTS900 is one of Honeywell’s most advanced propulsion solutions for light, single-engine helicopters. The engine, boasts dual FADEC control providing up to 40% improvements in payload capability at 12,000 ft (3,657M) and 22% improvement in fuel efficiency. With its “on condition” maintenance philosophy reduced maintenance costs over conventional hard time limit engines, the HTS-900 has been designed to meet a growing need for enhanced mission range and speed in remote and demanding high-altitude and hot weather environments.
- LTS101 Turboshaft Engine: Since its introduction, over 2,000 LTS101 engines have been delivered to customers worldwide logging over 11 million service hours. The LTS101 engine offers 7 percent more takeoff power, up to 10 percent lower specific fuel consumption, and greater than 30 percent lower operating costs. The LTS101 engine provides power for the Bell 222, the Airbus Helicopter BK117 and AS350 and the Avicopter AC311.
- Sky Connect Tracker III: The Sky Connect Tracker III is the first communications system that enables simultaneous worldwide automated tracking, text messaging and voice capabilities across the Iridium satellite network, to improve crew and passengers' safety and increase aircraft availability. The technology provides operators with simple and easy-to-use lines of communication, including two-way text messaging and voice services, as well as access to near real-time tracking of aircraft status, location, flight route and estimated time of arrival.
