AgustaWestland 139 helicopter operators will soon be able to upgrade their Honeywell SATCOM terminals to speeds that are as much as 100 times faster than the best current systems, providing the fastest-available communications via Inmarsat’s Swift Broadband L-band global satellite network.
A quick and easy high data rate (HDR) upgrade to our Aspire 200 SATCOM terminal for the AW139 is expected to be ready by the third quarter of 2015. We’ve already completed proof of concept testing on another platform and are moving ahead with flight testing, which is due to begin shortly. A supplemental type certificate (STC) has been developed specifically for the system on the AW139, enabling FAA and EASA certified installation.
With the upgrade, the system will be able to send and receive communications at speeds of up to 500 kbps, a dramatic improvement from today’s best available SATCOM systems for the AW139. The HDR upgrade also includes specialized interleaver waveform to compensate for rotor blockage and enable seamless broadband connectivity.
The upgrade is designed to meet the needs of AW139 operators flying a variety of missions including Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS), oil and gas, law enforcement and executive transportation. We’re currently working with several operators who will be first to use the upgraded solution in HEMS and law enforcement applications, where high-speed communications can mean the difference between life and death.
The AW139 is the first of several platforms that we are pursuing the STC for high data rate upgrade. Our HDR SATCOM solution lets operators enjoy the all-weather broadband performance of highly reliable L-band systems. Honeywell is the world leader in broadband connectivity for all types of aircraft. Learn more about SATCOM solutions.
