What did you learn from your years in the service that helps you perform your job today?
I learned to lead by example and to take care of and take interest in the people I work with. Teamwork and strong leadership is essential in the military as much as it is in the civilian world when trying to change a culture. The most important lesson I learned is that we are very lucky to be living in America and to appreciate all the little things that make our lives comfortable and happy. I was deployed to Afghanistan for one year and experienced first-hand abject poverty and desperation in a war-torn, third world country. Whenever I feel down, or feel like complaining, I think about the year lived amongst people who felt lucky to just survive another day.
