STEM Adventure in Taipei Helps Students Explore Aviation Opportunities

As a person who has worked in the Aerospace industry many years, I understand the need for future scientists and engineers. Encouraging students to embrace science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) studies is essential to making our world a better place and helping Honeywell remain a competitor in the global marketplace.

Honeywell needs talent to strengthen its innovation and promote technology excellence. It takes a smart brain with creative ideas to make technological advancements happen. That is why I felt privileged to be part of the “Soaring on the Wings of Dreams” program in Taipei, Taiwan, Aug. 25.

At this event, Honeywell Hometown Solutions, the company’s corporate citizenship initiative, and the Aerospace Industrial Development Corporation (AIDC) social responsibility program gave 42 young participants the experience of a lifetime.

During the daylong activity, students had the chance to tour the AIDC campus and airplane hangar, participate in NASA’s “A Human Adventure Exhibition” and try Honeywell’s virtual reality equipment.

The children, who came from an underprivileged remote area of Taiwan, were awestruck when they saw Indigenous Defense Fighter jets in the hangar and met actual test pilots. They asked questions about the chasing-wind project and sensors used to measure typhoons.

They also were excited to see vehicles that went into outer space, especially since they didn’t realize Taiwan actually built its own satellites that can orbit the earth.

Many times throughout the day, I felt overwhelmed and proud to be part of the initiative. Mentoring these students meant I was able to encourage and inspire them to pursue a brighter future, one that starts with a passion for STEM. Thanks to the project, participants had an opportunity to explore the aerospace industry and gain knowledge in the science of aviation and space – something that likely wouldn’t have happened without the support of Honeywell and AIDC. Being part of Soaring on the Wings of Dreams provided me with an opportunity for reflection. I believe if we can bring children to a place with wider view - a higher place to look further on the horizon - they can expand their boundaries and grow. For mentors, we can help them develop a different angle to view the world.

As industry leaders, we need to remember that planting a seed in the minds of future scientists is an important role and that’s the purpose of this activity.
