Y-12F Certifications Mark Important Milestone for China’s Aviation Industry

China's new-generation general-purpose regional aircraft, the Y-12F, has just earned its type certificate (TC) by the U.S. Federal Airworthiness Authority (FAA). This follows China's own certification by the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) late last year.

Y12FAs one of the Honeywell avionics team members on the Y-12F project, I was honored to be invited to witness the CAAC award on-site on Dec. 12, 2015.

Y12FThis latest certification means the aircraft, manufactured by the Harbin Aircraft Industry Group (HAIG), has met the highest industry standard and paves the way for its global sales.

The advanced turboprop Y-12F—a new variant of China’s most successful civil aircraft export product, the Y-12—boasts a redesigned wing as well as a new, more aerodynamic nose.

And of course Honeywell provides the integrated Primus Apex avionics system for this popular 19-seater.

Y12FPrimus Apex is Honeywell’s integrated avionics platform for turboprop and light business jet applications. It provides pilots with an unparalleled view of weather, traffic and terrain for superior situational awareness in today’s continuously changing airspace environment. The fully automated controls ensure more efficient flight deck operations and improved safety for operators. Primus Apex also provides the flexibility to meet the current and future needs of the Y-12F.

In fact, during the CAAC ceremony, HAIG's Y-12F project leader Mr. Li Xianzhe generously highlighted Honeywell's advanced integrated cockpit avionics system, saying "Honeywell is an industry leader in integrated avionics systems with proven designs that are highly reliable along with excellent technical support."

Later, he talked with Honeywell leaders and the team and praised Honeywell’s support and efforts for the Y-12F program during the past eight years.

The design actually started back in 2005 and we delivered our first shipset in June 2010. The aircraft had its maiden flight in December 2010.

The Y-12F aircraft can be used in various industries including passenger and cargo transportation, maritime monitoring, aerial delivery, aerial shooting, geological exploration, medical rescue—even artificial precipitation!

It's particularly gratifying to read the letters of appreciation that Harbin sent to Honeywell.

Y12F"We highly value the mutual trust, understanding and full communication the two companies have built bit by bit through the project. This was the solid cornerstone of the project’s success."

"We were also impressed by Honeywell’s professionality in certification, especially the great effort and efficient responses during the final phase of Y12F certification."

Clearly, the certification of the Y-12F marks an important milestone for China’s aviation manufacturing industry as this is the first use of a state-of-art fully integrated avionics system in a Chinese-developed and manufactured aircraft.
